Best know member of the Pomacentridae, especially after ‘Finding Nemo’, are the clown-anemone fishes. They have an interesting social life. The largest and dominant one in a strong hierarchy is the female, often living with a group of smaller males. In this group, only the largest male can fertilize the female. The other males are all sterile.
But when the female dies, the largest male has a sex change and becomes a female, working ovaries included. Together with that, the second largest male becomes fertile and therefore the dominant male. Order is restored. Together with clown-anemone fishes (Amphiprion, Premnas) Damsel make up the family Pomacentridae, with over 320 different species.
They are small, active and often brightly colored inhabitants of reefs. Most species, about 240 out of over 320, are found in the Indo-Pacific. The rest lives mostly in the Atlantic oceans, although there are also some species in more temperate areas and some species even call fresh water their home. They often swing in schools or pairs and are sometimes referred to as demoiselle fish.
